February 14 – April 5, ArtEast Art Center
Curators: Josh Potter, Barbara Jirsa
Artist Talk: Thursday, March 1
“Identified” celebrates art as a tool for an artist to empower their self and the community in which they work. See how these pieces become an extension of their artist’s identity and discover the power they have to encourage empowerment and autonomy.
Each piece in this exhibition celebrates and discusses the identity of the artist. What you see here are works which assert the artist’s inner self outwardly. As such, these works become more than visual representation, but are the actual physical tools of empowerment and self-actualization. Art, where social justice and agency are concerned, can be a powerful tool that affirms a marginalized community’s rightful place within the institutions that dominate cultural dialogue. To what extent, then, do these works define their creator; to what extent are they an extension of the artist’s self?
