Opening Reception: Friday, Aug 2, 6–8pm

Washington lakes play host to large populations of the indigenous Great Blue Heron. artEAST continues to salute our natural ecology and pay homage to this majestic bird and its rookeries by sponsoring a second Heron exhibit.

The project began in 2012 with the exhibition of twenty-six 3-D sculptures shown at several Puget Sound venues. Last year all the works were sold in the gallery or donated to the artEAST Annual Auction for fund raising. This year the flock may alight in three different locations, and begins its sojourn at our gallery.

standing

nesting

landing

This year we suspend the flock, in a two dimensional format, from the walls. The “canvas” takes the form of one of three different silhouettes scroll-cut by June Sekiguchi from ¼” hardboard. The forms measure approximately 24” x 24”, and will be one of the shapes shown, either as a positive or negative.

Curators Julie Rackley and Valaree Cox are pleased to announce that Meredith Langridge Anderson, Senior Events Manager at Bellevue Arts Museum is the juror for this show. Meredith has produced the Bellevue Arts Museum ARTSfair since 2009, and has worked directly with Northwest artists since 2005. In addition, she also created Indulge: Jewelry Marketplace and has a deep passion for the arts and promoting local artists!

Through a series of serendipitous events, artEAST was able to secure these paintings which were created during a 2009 Maywood Middle School group art project with instructor Nan Calvo-Gorman. ArtEAST is excited to honor and celebrate this work and the nearly fifty student artists who created it.

They are big, they are bright, they are bold and we will seldom ever be able to hang all 18 giant canvases at once. So we’ve decided to fill the artEAST Art Center classroom wall from floor to ceiling during June Art Walk to honor these students (many of whom are graduating this June) and all graduating seniors. This is a celebration of all young artists who are introduced to art concepts and making art in their school years. You won’t believe the energy you will feel when surrounded by these vivid works in large scale.

artEAST staff will be on hand to offer information on Teen Art Camps this summer, other arts education available at artEAST, and the many community programs hosted at the Art Center. Don`t miss this family friendly public exhibition!

Call for Fall: Wondrous Stories from artEAST Art Center: artEAST Art Center - the power of community in visual arts

Open Call for Art

Wondrous Stories:
A Narrative Art Exhibition

September 13th –October 19 2013

Curator: Leslie Nan Moon

artEAST Art Center

artEAST invites you to tell your Wondrous Story. Narrative art is a visual form of storytelling, whether that story is just of a brief moment in time or was years in the making. Events taking place over time can be compressed into a single image. Narrative original fine art in any medium is welcome.

While your artwork itself does not need to include words, all artists are asked to submit a brief written explanation of their “story”. For example, here is our curator, Leslie’s story:

Trevor in Autismland

Photo and artwork by Leslie Nan Moon

As a parent of a child with autism, Alice in Wonderland has a deeper meaning to me. It is often suggested that Lewis Carroll himself was on the autism spectrum. Possibly explaining the wonderful nonsense content of the story. Watching my son navigate through the world is a little like watching Alice. Sometimes he fits, sometimes he doesn’t. Sometimes he understands what others are saying and other times it makes no sense at all.

I long for the day when he can reach that key and unlock the door to the mystery of autism.

We are pleased to host the works of artEAST member Dorothy Bonneau in our inaugural exhibition at Blakely Hall. Dorothy’s colorful and textural work captures the light and emotion inherent in landscapes, nature and animals. Her abstract, fish, bird, seascapes and landscape oil paintings are on display in June, followed by an exhibition of barnyard animal paintings starting June 29th. The show will run through July 2013.

Dorothy trained in portraiture under the guidance of Christopher Clark and Constance Miller in Tampa, Florida and also worked with Roman and Constantine Chatov in Atlanta during the 1970’s. Her paintings have been exhibited across the United States and Europe. Dorothy and her husband live and maintain a studio in Redmond. They work collaboratively on ceramic sculpture and individually on paintings.
