Exploring Light & Shadow in Painting

Saturday, May 6, 10am–12pm
(1 session)

Instructor: Diana Grant

This class is about exploring the effect of light and shadows in painting through developing an understanding of the sun’s path, how to make an accurate looking shadow and what color to make the shadow.
We will look at the work of contemporary artists and how they use light and shadows to make paintings come alive. We’ll do some shadow casting exercises with different shapes to get a feel for painting a realistic shadow.
Finally, painters can bring in work for a critique at the end of class. A variety of reference materials will be available. We will work with water based paint in class on mixed media or watercolor paper.

Diana Grant has a degree in Architecture from the University of Washington and worked for over 20 years as the Project Manager for the Lighting Design Lab in Seattle. She has been steadily painting for the last nine years and shows her work at the artEAST Gallery.
