Artist’s Statement

As a photographer, I’m a sucker for beauty, and I find it everywhere I look, from the mundane to the magnificent. Much of my recent work has roots in nature, mostly because I really love being outdoors and I believe that if there’s a god, that’s where I will encounter her. Or him.

My eye is drawn to color, texture, pattern, lines, and form, and I find that I prefer images that lean towards the abstract. Sometimes my work is a literal representation of what I see, pointing the viewer to the wonder I experience when I step outside. Other times, I’m intrigued by capturing interesting details that, when stripped out of their contextual environment, invite the viewer into deeper curiosity about what they are seeing. Viewing a photograph (or another work of art) is a two-way experience: there’s what the artist puts into the frame, and there’s what the viewer experiences and infers through their own interaction with the piece. And that, for me, is the really interesting conversation. I love when my images leave the viewer wondering as to what it actually is—especially when I know what the real subject is and I get to hear their guesses!

I use different techniques and equipment to make my images, preferring to capture as much in camera as I can, in order to do just minimal manipulation of the image in the digital darkroom.
